SENIOR DAY PROGRAM

The Adams Senior Day Program is designed to provide supervised care to area seniors in a safe, nurturing, home-away-from-home atmosphere.  The program welcomes frail and isolated seniors who need and would like to spend the greater portion of their day with others.  There are various types of participants with varying degrees of needs.  The program is equipped to meet the needs of frail, isolated, and confused seniors, to those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s and other age related disorders.  The Adams Senior Day Program provides friendship, laughter and failure-free activities.  Daily activities include:  reminisce, current events, local history, music, singing, exercise, games, gardening, baking, special outings and more.  There are also nutritious meals provided by The Elder Services mealsite, for a $2.00 suggested donation.  The program operates from 8:00 am to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Adams Senior Day Program is a viable alternative to early nursing home placement.  The Adams Senior Day Program is not a medical program, therefore participants must be able to administer their own medications and govern their own personal care; they should be nonviolent and are expected to act in an appropriate manner.  Participants of the program are transported to and from the center by a wheelchair accessible van.

In addition to providing all this to area seniors, the Senior Day Program provides respite care (some free time) for family members who may be the caregiver for an elderly person.  The program allows these caregivers to have some relief from their responsibilities and have the confidence that their loved one is being taken care of by a qualified and devoted staff.

Elder Services of Berkshire County may cover the fee if the participant is eligible.  An alternative would be to pay privately $20 for a full day or $10.50 for a half day.  The transportation cost is $1.75 per mile.

If there is someone you may know that could benefit from the Adams Senior Day Program, please call Toni Alizio, Coordinator, at the Adams Council on Aging at
743-8333.
